WHO's Maria Van Kerkhove has said that COVID-19's Omicron variant is transmitting efficiently as its multiple mutations enable it to adhere to human cells more easily. Second reason is immune escape, which means people can be reinfected. Thirdly, replication of Omicron is seen in upper respiratory tract, unlike previous variants like Delta that replicated in lower respiratory tracts, lungs.
